UNDERSTANDING OBESITY

Obesity is a disease characterized by excessive body fat. Individuals affected by excess weight are also at risk for developing health problems such as: heart disease, stroke, diabetes, certain types of cancer, gout (joint pain caused by excess uric acid) and gallbladder disease. Excess weight can also cause problems such as sleep apnea (interrupted breathing during sleep) and osteoarthritis (wearing away of the joints). The most widely-used method of measuring and identifying obesity is the Body Mass Index (BMI) - it is a ratio that relates your height and weight.
